My name is Chris Harrison. I have a background in graphic art, graphic design, painting, and drawing. I come from a family of artists which include photographers, painters, woodworkers, craftsmen, musicians, and performing artists. I have been influenced by artists throughout my life. “I am an artist who loves photography.”
I was given my first camera at an early age and began to take pictures of the world around me. I have always loved the way the world looks through the lens of a camera. I didn’t begin my formal training in photography until high school where I learned basic photographic principles, darkroom techniques, and camera functions. Later, I attended vocational school to learn more advanced photographic techniques and darkroom principles.
In the early 1990’s I worked as a photographer for Van Gogh Studios in Chicago, Illinois where I was able to advance my skills in portraiture, including family portraits, and child portraiture. In 1993, I moved to Wyoming where I attended Northwest College and the University of Wyoming where my focus turned from Art to Criminal Justice and Psychology. History was the main focus for much of my college career. “History and photography go hand in hand. Every photograph is a moment captured in time and forever becomes part of the historical record of our lives, the human race, and our planet.” I recently received further education in photography from the New York Institute of Photography to brush up on photography skills and learn more advanced techniques.
I am currently interested in every avenue of photography whether it be portraits, sports photography, landscapes, or just fun pictures to find the humor and irony in life. Elliott Erwitt once said “Nothing happens when you sit at home. I always make it a point to carry a camera with me at all times…I just shoot at what interests me at that moment.” I agree with this philosophy. I think there is art in everything we do, everything we see, even the normal mundane objects we take for granted. I want to show people the world from my perspective. I try to turn every photograph into a stunning piece of art, worthy of viewing hundreds of times and over many generations. Afterall, “I am an artist who loves photography.”
